Saturday’s Commonwealth District wrestling tournament meant different things to different teams. For host Riverbend and fellow Class 6 members Colonial Forge and Massaponax, the event doubled as a qualifier for next week’s Region 6B tournament.

For Mountain View, it offered an opportunity to assert supremacy over heated rivals.

And for three-time defending Class 5 state champion Brooke Point, it didn’t mean a heck of a lot. With the risk of injury outweighing the allure of a district trophy, the Black–Hawks opted not to wrestle their varsity squad, instead fielding a lineup composed of eight junior varsity grapplers.

“My philosophy is: I like to have the weekend off before competition that actually matters,” Brooke Point coach Travis Harris said. “We want to be healthy for the things that count.”

With the Black–Hawks offering minimal resistance, Mountain View cruised to the team title, finishing 87 points ahead of the runner-up Bears. Colonial Forge (178.5) placed third.

The Wildcats sent nine wrestlers to the championship finals, with Dalton Arce (120 pounds) Elijah White (145), James Mooney (152), Joseph Scarfe (160), Joel Garza (170) and Assem Chew (182) claiming individual titles.

“It’s good for the sport of wrestling,” Mountain View coach Bud Black said of the district tournament, which reverted to a bracket format on Saturday after experimenting with duals last season. “I pushed these kids really, really hard. They had morning practices; they were at the school at 6 a.m.”

The top two finishers in each weight class representing Riverbend, Colonial Forge and Massaponax advance to next week’s Region 6B tournament. All wrestlers from Mountain View, Brooke Point, North Stafford and Stafford are eligible to compete in the Region 5D tournament, which will be held on Feb. 15 at North Stafford.

“Even with all our injuries, 11 entered [districts] and we’re taking 10 [to regionals],” Riverbend coach Mark Roberts said. “That can help us compete for the region title next week.”
