Virginia added a third commitment to its class of 2019 on Monday when small forward Justin McKoy pledged to the Cavaliers.
McKoy, a 3-star recruit per 247sports.com, joins 4-star center Kadin Shedrick (Holly Springs, North Carolina) and 4-star point guard Casey Morsell (Washington, D.C.) in the class.
“I chose a school that not only will improve me as a player but as a man of God,” McCoy wrote in an Twitter post.
The Cary, North Carolina native chose Virginia over offers from N.C. State, North Carolina and Penn State, among others. He was believed to be deciding primarily between the Cavaliers and the Tar Heels.
McKoy’s announcement comes on a day of great upheaval for Virginia, with guards De’Andre Hunter and Ty Jerome both declaring for the 2019 NBA Draft earlier Monday.
It’s unclear if McKoy, the No. 15 recruit in the state of North Carolina, will take a redshirt season or contribute right away for the defending NCAA Tournament champions. If he does play as a true freshman, he’ll likely compete with guards Braxton Key, Marco Anthony and Kody Stattmann and forward Francesco Badocchi for minutes at small forward/power forward.
